The apartment building where Lily's brother reportedly lived loomed ahead, its structure an eyesore amidst the decay of the surrounding area. Jade eyed the graffiti-tagged walls, the shattered windows patched with cardboard and tape, the detritus of lives spilling out onto the pavement. The place exuded a sense of abandonment and despair—a far cry from Lily's meticulously kept home.

With each step towards the entrance, Jade's heart picked up speed, thudding against her ribs. She shared a look with Connor, seeing her own determination mirrored in his eyes. They ascended the cracked steps, Jade's athletic grace counterbalanced by the heaviness of the situation. The pressure was mounting—each case always felt personal, but this one tugged at the scars of her past, the unresolved loss of her sister.

Knocking on the door marked 3B, they waited. Seconds ticked by, filled with the ambient noise of the city and the distant sound of a siren. Jade's senses were heightened, picking up the faintest shuffle of movement behind the door. When it finally creaked open, they were met with the wary eyes of Jason Allen.

"Who are you?" Jason's voice was rough, tinged with suspicion. He was lean, his features sharing Lily's, but weathered by hard living.

"Special Agent Connor Higgins, FBI," Connor introduced himself, showing his badge. "And this is Jade Savage. We're working on your sister's disappearance."

Jason's posture stiffened, the reluctance clear in his stance as he barred the doorway. "I've got nothing to say to you," he muttered, his eyes darting between them.

"Jason, we found a photo of you and Lily inside her house," Jade interjected, her tone steady yet empathetic. "It looks recent. We just want to understand what's happened to her."

For a moment, Jason's façade faltered, a flicker of concern crossing his features. But he recovered quickly, retreating behind a wall of defensiveness. "I don't know where she is," he snapped. "Now, leave me alone."

"Please, Jason," Jade pressed, her mind racing with the possible connections he might provide. "We believe you might be able to help us find Lily. We're not here to judge or make things difficult for you."

Her words seemed to reach him, a silent plea passing through the crack of the door. He hesitated, a battle raging within. Jade could see it in his eyes—the same tormented look she'd seen in the mirror after her sister's death. The same guilt, the same pain.

"Fine," Jason relented with a sigh, opening the door wider. "But I'm telling you, I don't know much."

They stepped into the dimness of Jason's world, the musty air clinging to them as they entered. Jade's gaze swept across the disarray, taking in the evidence of a life frayed at the edges. There was no time for pity, though; only the hunt for truth mattered now.

The dilapidated apartment seemed to sag with the weight of untold stories, each peeling layer of wallpaper a silent testament to faded memories and broken dreams. Jade stepped across the threshold, her senses immediately assaulted by the pungent scent of mildew. The room was cloaked in shadows, only the faintest light seeping through grimy windows.
